Just wanted to catch ya’ll up on some things that have been
going on here since I left last Tuesday!
Tuesday- Flight to Atlanta. We stayed the night there and on
Wednesday we took a flight to Minneapolis, then Amsterdam, then arrived at
Nairobi on Thursday.
Thursday we stayed the night at Milimani Backpackers Hostel
with the World Race squad. It was a pretty nice place, I think. I got almost a
real bed to sleep on which was awesome
and they had running showers! We stayed at this place until Saturday when my
team left Nairobi and went to Busia (along the Nairobi/Uganda border). It was a
10-12 hour bus ride. Lets just say 50% of the ride, I was in the air.
Literally. And on this trip, I was introduced to my first “squatty potty on
the way. Very different. And it is smart to carry toilet paper with you where
ever you go.
Now we are staying in a host home. No tents! These people
are so nice! This house has lights in most of the rooms. The lights come and
go…so my headlamp was a great investment. We have eleven girls sleeping in one
room. The whole floor is our bed. This house has real toilets (Not American
real…)..so thankful. Our shower options are bucket showers….needless to say…I
have not showered yet! Water is so precious here. Getting to wash my hands is a
treat! The water that comes out of the sinks here has typhoid in it. Which a few
of us have already washed our faces in it and brushed our teeth with it. Oops.
We have also had an encounter with lice…trying to figure out a solution for
that now. The mosquitos/bugs are pretty much every where too. Definitely using
my mosquito net when I’m sleeping!
Yesterday, Sunday, we went to Pastor Giddeons church. It was
so fun, except I woke up sick. I went to the kids service for a bit, pretty
much none of them spoke English. They were memorizing bible verses and singing.
It was so cute. Then I went to the regular service. Worship was awesome! I
danced with a couple little girls during the service! After church Pastor
Giddeon took us out to eat. We had French fries and sweet and sour sauce
(ketchup?) which I managed to bust the bottle all over my fries, my skirt, my
coach purse, table, and the floor. It’s not the first clumsy moment I’ve had on this trip. Last night they
cooked us some fresh chicken. And by fresh..I mean, they killed it in the
backyard right before dinner. They don’t waste any parts either..the chicken
head was even on the plate. I went for the legs..playing it safe! Mondays are
our days off during the week. Our ministry begins tomorrow! We have gotten an
idea of what we will be doing â€" building a church office one week, and then I
think the majority of the time we will be doing door to door evangelism, and
also visiting hospitals, prisons, and a girls school. I’m so excited!
Today was my turn to do the dishes. It was very interesting.
It makes me so grateful for dishwashers! We also have to take our shoes off
before coming inside. The floors are not very clean in here either.
OKAY! So the point for this blog…I know it sounds like I’m
complaining about all these little things. I think it’s pretty safe to say,
this is the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been. But the truth is…I’ve never felt
so COMFORTABLE! This is what it’s about. Although our ministries haven’t
started yet, I’m seeing and experiencing the fact that Christ has not called us
to live comfortably. My comfort is in Christ..not my health, not getting to
shower everyday, or non typhoid water, or the luxuries of America. Having the
mind set of a servant, of Christ, is the only thing that matters. The bible
says “we will not be moved because our faith is in Christ alone. Thank you
Jesus!
Side note: butter is not refrigerated here. And on our way
to this internet café a really sweet woman bought us some sugar cane! And I almost
got ran over by a bike!
